Even thou the first glimpse at the product was at the Long Beach Convention Center during the April 1-3 Space Tech Expo, the TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. or TCS, one of the world leaders in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology announced this year, on April 8, the new radiation-tolerant NAND flash memory device.
NAND flash memory
The NAND flash memory is distinguished by a unique approach to the logic function. Due to the fact that it’s denser and has less power needs than the NOR flash, the NAND flash memory is used as main memory for solid-state drives, like the USB flash drives and other similar products used for general digital data storage and transfer.
TCS’s storage device
The TCS’s storage device is configured as an asynchronous NAND flash memory with a high density memory of 8 Gb, hermetically sealed in 48-lead ceramic package. It reliably carries digital data in space harsh conditions, military, medical and other difficult environments, even with potential radiation exposure. Also, its CMOS floating gate technology provides 100k write cycles and a 10 years data retention period.
It can be easily implemented in the space industry, because of its low power needs and non-volatility, and also on launch vehicles, aircrafts and other high-reliability environments. Also, the device passed rigorous testing required by the US military and fulfilled the space-level requirements for high-reliability and durability.
Choosing the right NAND:
In the last years, TCS provided the space community with high-reliability components and services that are essential for long-life spacecraft. Also, they have performed total parts management for almost every space agency worldwide and supplied materials, components and parts for over 150 spacecraft that were manufactured in the American continent, Europe and Asia. TCS are specialised in highly rugged solid-state drives and are offer both customised and industry standard configurations for industrial, aerospace and military applications.
Regarding the radiation-tolerant NAND flash memory, the TCS Government Solutions Group President, Mike Bristol, said that the TCS’ radiation-tolerant NAND flash memory meets both the increasing need of storing digital data in space and the need of long-term reliability and stability components.
